Review: Roll Up Leather Chess Set (Melia Games) – English

A chess set generally needs no introduction, except, of course, Melia’s games. Melia makes leather editions of games and game accessories, including this roll-up chess set.

Most of Melia’s products share the same principles: a leather zippered case allows you to safely store the various components. Sometimes you have to puzzle with the space to accommodate all the playing pieces, but this makes for a compact storage system. Attached to the pouch is a leather and roll-up play board or mat like a flap. You can roll this flap around the pouch and use two leather straps with metal snaps to secure the whole thing.

Because you can roll up the games, they are ideal to take with you on (for example) vacation. You can put the games almost anywhere, allowing you to play chess in very unique locations. Chess on a mountain anyone? By the way, a game of mind after a good physical workout is ideal to unwind and work on your mental strength in addition to physical strength.

Melia’s roll-up chess sets include beautiful wooden chess pieces in addition to the case for the chess pieces and a roll-up chess board. Multiple options are also available as far as this roll-up chess set is concerned. There are multiple leathers to choose from as well as multiple colors and styles. By the way, there is also an edition available with magnets that will ensure that the pieces stay in place better when playing. This offers even more opportunities to play in the aforementioned unique locations!

In chess, you try to checkmate the other player’s king. You do this by moving one of your playing pieces and capturing other pieces each turn. Each playing piece moves (and captures) in a different way. A pawn can move a simple step forward and capture other pieces diagonally. This pawn has some early game courage at the beginning and can move as much as two steps as its first move. The rook can move orthogonally in straight lines. The bishop does the same trick but diagonally. The horses make a separate move in the so-called horse jump (also a legal term in Dutch law for the aficionados among us). The queen can move in all directions and the king is a real man. He can do exactly the same as his wife, but to a lesser extent. The king can move in all directions, but with only one step.

This is chess in a nutshell and we will probably receive a lot of reports that the above paragraph does not do the game justice. Therefore, we will say it here in advance: chess is complex. There are countless moves and strategies, and countless books have been written about the game.

With the chess set made by Melia, the quality of the leather will give you a chess set for the rest of your life that you will want to take with you wherever you go.
