Review: PanDogMonium (Clarendon Games) – English

Had you always wanted to act like a dog? Then Pandogmonium, a cacophony of chaos and confusion full of our best furry friends, might be the game for you. Let’s have a sniff at this game!

In Pandogmonium, players try to collect as many cards as possible by reacting to the cards played as quickly as possible. The player who has the most cards after one of the other players runs out of cards wins!

At the beginning of the game, each player gets a draw pile with (approximately) the same number of cards. In turns, players draw the top card from their personal pile and place it face-up on the central draw pile in the middle of the table.

The different cards show dogs with toys, bones or sticks. Players win all cards from the central draw pile by hitting the pile first. However, you are not allowed to just hit the table. You may only hit the pile if:

  • the top two cards depict the same dog or there is only a single other dog between two of the same dogs;
  • if the top three cards depict the same toy; or
  • if the top card is a bone.

If a branch is placed on the pile, the player who manages to grab this card first may throw it across the room. Other players must now fetch and return this card to the owner often resulting in a literal dog pile. The other player may continue placing cards and possibly even win the pile.

PanDogMonium is similar to other speedy games such as the game Slapjack. A fun element is the different drawings and also different ways through which players have to hit the pile. As a result, they have to consider many different possibilities and outcomes: absolute fun chaos. I think the most fun element is the card with the stick. As soon as this card flies through the room, you know all hell is breaking loose: true pandogmonium!
