Review: IQ Twins (Smart Games) – English

Each puzzle piece in IQ Twins has a fraternal twin, so the pieces look a lot alike, but you have to think carefully about exactly how they fit into the puzzle. Is twinning indeed winning as far as IQ Twins is concerned?

A puzzle game I remember fairly well is Rush Hour, where you have to move different cars in a parking lot in the right way so that your little red car can drive away from the parking lot. Sort of like Italian parking in game form and with less debris. Other puzzles I remember well are various wooden and plastic puzzles where you have to place different puzzle pieces in different shapes in the right place. Many such puzzles or similar puzzles are published by Smart Games which has been specializing in different types of puzzles and puzzle games for young and old for years.

IQ Twins is a similar puzzle game where you have to place different shapes in the right places. You get different pieces in different colors and shapes and a booklet with assignments. Each assignment shows where certain pieces (or parts of pieces) should be placed and further, you as the player have to place the remaining pieces back. What makes IQ Twins different? In IQ Twins there are always two different pieces that are very similar. Kind of like fraternal twins as the title of this puzzle game suggests. These twins (pieces) have the same shape and color, but one puzzle piece must be placed on the tray at a 90° angle, while the other piece can only be placed in the tray at a 45° angle. This makes it interesting and amusingly frustrating at times when you want to place certain pieces and obviously can’t.

Sometimes you feel like a short smooth puzzle that you can easily take with you to kill some time and then Smart Games’ IQ Twins is very suitable. The puzzle comes in a convenient size and in a sturdy and convenient package. The lid keeps all the pieces and rules in place and when you are ready to make a puzzle you flip open the lid with all the pieces inside. Then you also flip open the booklet and choose one of the 120 puzzles/tasks.

120 puzzles sounds like a limited number, but they are more than enough puzzles to keep you entertained multiple times (especially the trickier levels). IQ Twins (or similar puzzles) are not puzzles that you will do for several hours at a time, but at regular intervals, so you will have forgotten puzzles that you have completed before before the end is even in sight. You’ll pick up IQ Twins from time to time to rack your brains a bit.
