NL: Na Spicy komt 999 Games nu met Coyote. Wederom een kort kaartspelletje in een glimmend doosje waarbij spelers moeten bluffen en gokken om de winst te pakken. Spicy is een van mijn favoriete korte spelletjes van de afgelopen tijd. Is Coyote een waardige spirituele opvolger of kun je je portie beter aan Fikkie geven?
Zoals ik hierboven al omschreef, moeten spelers in Coyote wederom bluffend en gokkend het spel overleven. Dit keer moeten spelers daadwerkelijk overleven, want als jij de bluf van je tegenspelers niet doorprikt, lig je uit het spel. Als een echte Coyote moet je azen op je prooi. Elke speler begin met drie spiekkaarten, waarvan er twee “open” worden gespeeld. Daarnaast krijgt iedere speler een van de speelkaarten voor zich geplaatst in een van de plastic houders. De desbetreffende speler kan deze speelkaart niet zijn, maar de andere spelers wel. Tevens wordt er een speelkaart gesloten op tafel geplaatst. De kaarten lopen uiteen in waardes en er zijn zelfs negatieve kaarten en kaarten met speciale eigenschappen. Te beginnen met de startspeler gaan de spelers nu “(op)bieden” op de geschatte totale waarde van alle kaarten.
Na een bod moet volgende speler of het bod verhogen of het bod uitdagen. Door een open spiekkaart gesloten te draaien, mag de speler de gesloten speelkaart op tafel bekijken, maar deze speler moet in dat geval wel opbieden. Als een bod wordt uitgedaagd, gaan de spelers de waardes van alle kaarten bij elkaar optellen. Is de totale waarde lager dan het laatst bod, dan wint de uitdagende speler. Is de waarde hoger dan het laatste bod, dan wint de speler die het laatste bod maakte de uitdaging. De verliezende speler moet een van zijn of haar spiekkaarten afleggen. De winnende speler mag een spiekkaart opendraaien indien mogelijk. Zijn al je spiekkaarten op, dan lig je uit het spel. De laatst overgebleven speler wint Coyote.
Coyote is net als Spicy een grappig en vlot gok- en blufspelletje. In tegenstelling tot Spicy kunnen spelers in Coyote worden uitgeschakeld. Normaal ben ik geen fan van zogeheten “player-elimination”, maar in dit geval duren potjes zo kort dat dit geen enkel probleem is. Coyote speelt lekker vlot en daardoor speel je graag meerdere potjes achter elkaar om revanche te krijgen. Erg vermakelijk om tussendoor te spelen. Coyote bevat wederom prachtige illustraties. Dit keer zijn deze illustraties afkomstig van een Native American artiest. Leuk weetje: wist je dat in Native-American folklore de Coyote een vergelijkbare rol speelt als de vos in West-Europeaanse fabels? De Coyote is net als de vos een ware plaaggeest. En een plaaggeest is precies wat jij in Coyote moet zijn!
EN: After Spicy, 999 Games now presents Coyote. Another short card game in a shiny box where players have to bluff and gamble to win. Spicy is one of my favourite short games of recent times. Is Coyote a predator or prey?
As I described above, in Coyote players must once again bluff and gamble to survive the game. This time players really have to survive, because if you don’t call your opponents’ bluff, you are out of the game. Like a real Coyote, you have to prey on your prey. Each player starts with three cheat cards, two of which are played face up. In addition, each player gets one of the playing cards placed in front of them in one of the plastic holders. The player in question cannot be this playing card, but the other players can. A card is also placed face down on the table. The cards vary in value and there are even negative cards and cards with special properties. Starting with the starting player, the players now “bid” on the estimated total value of all cards.
After a bid, the next player must either raise the bid or challenge the bid. By turning over an open chess card, the player may look at the closed playing card on the table, but this player must then bid. If a bid is challenged, the players add up the values of all the cards. If the total value is lower than the last bid, the challenging player wins. If the value is higher than the last bid, the player who made the last bid wins the challenge. The losing player must discard one of his or her cheat cards. The winning player may reveal a cheat card if possible. If you run out of cheat cards, you are out of the game. The last remaining player wins Coyote.
Like Spicy, Coyote is a fun and easy guessing and bluffing game. Unlike Spicy, players can be eliminated in Coyote. Normally I am not a fan of so called “player-elimination”, but in this case the games are so short that it is no problem at all. Coyote plays nice and smooth and you like to play several games in a row to get revenge. Very entertaining to play in between other games during a game night. Coyote contains beautiful illustrations. This time the illustrations are by a Native American artist. Fun fact: did you know that in Native-American folklore the Coyote plays a similar role as the fox in Western European fables? Like the fox, the Coyote is a true trickster. And a trickster is exactly what you should be in Coyote!
