Iedere speler stelt een team samen van een aantal magiërs met bijbehorende monsters. Sommige monsters zijn iets moeilijker te doden, dat zie je aan de getallen in de hoek van de kaart. Speel tot drie monsters per beurt of gebruik ze om je tegenstander aan te vallen. Geen monsters meer op handen? Vul dan je hand aan en scoor riftforce aan de hand van de door jou onbestreden gebieden.
