Camping. Sleeping in a tent or caravan in a romantic outdoor area. Or, traveling from campsite to campsite with your camper van. Camping. Rising early, getting out of your tent wearing just your slippers shuffling through the wet grass looking for a toilet – obviously with a roll of toilet under your armpit. There are a lot of campsites – from the somewhat decrepit to luxurious glamping sites. In Happy Campers, players get to dice together the ideal campsite for their visitors.
Happy Campers is a roll-and-write game published by Dutch publisher Studio Infinitus (formerly Mare Infinitus) and conceived by Gorcum brother and sister, Daniel and Vera Knoot. These creatives conceived the game in a caravan it obviously had to be ideal to play on a campsite. Small and simple enough. They succeeded.
In this game, the players roll dice to form their ideal campsite. There should be enough spots for tents, enough nature, but also enough toilets so that this campsite literally and figuratively is on a roll.
Each turn, the player who prefers to roll the two dice at that moment throws the two dice and players then start using one value to choose a shape and the other value for the icon they are going to draw in that shape. This way a fun brainteaser is created, as players have to score with the shapes and icons. The icons correspond to an element of the campsite, and each icon must appear on the score sheet. In addition, you score more points if the contiguous areas are larger.
The multiplayer version of the game has an interactive edge, as when players roll two equal values, they have to draw at each other on the leaves, allowing you to ruin each other’s plans like rain during a holiday.
Looking for more of a challenge? There are also challenge cards for added variety and challenge. Happy Campers is a fun and smooth roll-and-write with an engaging twist, as you have to puzzle together the combination of shapes and icons each turn, confronting you with interesting choices. Perfect for the tent.
