Review: CuBirds (Catch Up Games) – English

“In ’87, Huey Lewis released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Hip to be Square”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it’s also a personal statement about the band itself. And again hip to be square in CuBirds, a fast game in which you try to collect cubistic birds!

They say that watching TV gives you squared eyes. The alternative? Playing card games, of course! I still think I might have gotten squared eyes, because all the birds on the cards look like they have flown straight out of Minecraft. Your goal? Collect them all! If you collect 7 different bird species or 2 sets of three of the same bird species, you win the game.

Several cards are placed face up in the middle of the table. During your turn, you may add a bird from your hand to these face-up cards. Do you enclose birds with the same bird species? Then you may take the enclosed birds. Otherwise you may draw two birds from the draw pile. The cards indicate how many birds of a certain species you must have in your hand to place this bird in front of you.

CuBirds is a fun and cute short card game with enough depth to play several games in a row. By cleverly playing your cards, you can collect a lot of birds in your roost. However, pay close attention to your opponents. Before you know it, they will play duck hunt with the ducks you just placed on the table.
